Natural values
The northern part of the commune is considerably integrated with the town plan of Lublin. It is traversed by the naturally meandering Czerniejówka river, along the course of which there are natural water reservoirs. The southwest corner of the commune is overgrown with pinewood accompanied by unique swamps which are the last enclave of mud turtle in this part of Europe. The western outskirts of the commune are touched by the Krężniczanka river with the extremely rare population of musk-rats and crayfishes requiring pure water. This uniquely clean area has been classified as part of the Czerniejowski Protected Landscape Area.
History
In the Middle Ages, the area to the south of Lublin was traversed by the busy Ruthenian route, otherwise called the Lublin route. In the contemporary period, it was replaced by a the „Skrzynice route” leading from Lublin via Abramowice to Rawa Ruska. The oldest villages of the commune, such as Wilczopole, Metow and Cmitow (mentioned since the 14th and the 15th centuries), belonged originally to yeomanry. The latter half of the 17th century saw the process of cumulating of small properties in one hand. Tomasz Kazimierz Gtuski of Drzewice possessed Dominow, Abramowice, part of Wilczopole, Cmitow and Skrzynice (outside the commune). To crown the activity, he founded a small agricultural town Głusko, later Głusk in 1688. The subsequent owners of the landed estate scrambled for gaining further territories.
In the 1820s, the property passed over to the Grabowski family. The importance of Gtusk began to go down. Paralyzed with the vicinity of a large urban area, hit by fires and plagues, separated from the tourist traffic due to the construction of the strategic road Lublin-Piaski, it lost the civic rights in 1869/70. After the reform of 1973, Głusk became a seat of the commune. In 1987, the northern part of the commune as well as Głusk and Abramowice were incorporated into Lublin. Now the capital of the commune is outside its borders.
